He didn't want his mom to think he was crazy or fearful that she wouldn't believe him. So while in traffic with his mom Cole sees the person who has been killed in the accident ahead and is standing right next to his car door window. With malcom being there for Cole encouraging him and giving him advice it bring him closer to his mother. She also realizes that the ghosts are the reason he had bruises on him. Second, Malcolm helps Cole overcome his disorder of being able to see the dead by telling him “ to listen to the ghosts because they want him to help them”. So he takes the psychologist's advice and listens to the ghosts. On one particular occasion a little girl had been poisoned by her mother. With the advice that Malcolm, Cole listening and not being afraid he uncovers the mystery of the girls death. She told him to play the vcr which had been previously recorded and it shows the mother making her child sick rather than helping her feel better. But having malcom to talk to and ease his mind and help Cole become active. Even fitting in with the other kids at school and getting the lead role in the schools play. That made Cole very happy to be able to enjoy being a kid that sees ghosts. The doctor made it easy for Cole to be himself around him because he could see ghosts too. Malcolm also gave him the confidence to listen to them and Cole turns out to be a big help to the ghosts.
